Marble base of an offering

Marble base of an offering

Marble base of an offering. Found to the north-east of the Theseion, Athens, in 1891. It served as the base, on which a votive bronze tripod would have been erected. On three sides of the base appears the same relief, showing a horseman galloping towards a tripod. The fourth side is carved with an inscription supplying the names of three victorious phylarchs and the signature of the sculptor Bryaxis. Circa middle of the 4th c. BC. (NAM Γ 1733)
